Group Swim Lessons

The West Chicago Park District offers a great environment for children to learn how to swim, stay safe in the water, and have fun. Swim lessons provide a way to develop fundamental skills, build confidence, grow and learn from others, and encourage healthy living for children ages 9-months to 12 years. Our group swim lessons are designed to provide instruction in a small group setting where children can learn or practice their skills while meeting new friends. Regular sessions are 30 minutes in length and each session includes 8 lessons.

Lesson Level Finder

Guppy

(4-7 yrs)

Swimmer's ability:

  • Non-swimmer

  • Little or some experience in water

  • Comfortable in water without parent

Swimmer will work on:

  • Submerging face underwater

  • Supported float on stomach and back with a barbell

  • Forward motion with a barbell

  • Kicking and beginning arm movements

Minnow

(9mo-3 yrs with Parent)

Swimmer's ability:

  • Non-swimmer

  • Requires parent assistance in water

Swimmer will work on:

  • Basic water safety skills

  • Helping parents teach their children to be comfortable in the water

 

Seahorse

(6-12 yrs)

Swimmer's ability:

  • Comfortable in water

  • Can swim 3 yards with barbell

  • Comfortable submerging face

Swimmer will work on:

  • Submerging head under water

  • Unsupported float on stomach and back with barbell

  • Arm movements for front crawl

  • Kicking on stomach and back using barbell

Jellyfish

(2-3 yrs)

Swimmers ability:

  • Non-swimmer

  • Little or no experience in water

  • Somewhat comfortable in water without parent

Swimmer will work on:

  • Entering and exiting water safely

  • Front and back float

  • Gain confidence in water without parent

  • Kicking, bubble blowing, and submersion

Eel

(8-12 yrs)

Swimmer's ability:

  • Comfortable in deep end

  • Can cwim 15 yards with kickboard

Swimmer will work on:

  • Fundamentals of treading water and rhythmic breathing

  • Over arm recovery for front and back crawl

  • Basics of breaststroke and butterfly may be introduced

Private and Semi-Private Swim Lessons

Our private and semi-private swim lessons are designed to provide instruction in a small group (or one-on-one) setting where children can learn or practice their skills while meeting new friends. A staff member will contact you to schedule a time for the lesson.
